Design tanks beyond the API 650 limit — biaxial shell design, compression ring, anchorage, Appendix Q & R

What you'll learn
Calculate shell thickness by the biaxial method — meridional and latitudinal stress worked through a full tank profile
Size the compression ring region at the roof-to-shell junction, the calculation that governs low-pressure tank design
Determine when API 620 applies rather than API 650 or ASME VIII — scope, pressure limits and design temperature
Design anchorage and uplift resistance against internal pressure, wind and seismic loading
Apply Appendix R for refrigerated service and Appendix Q for cryogenic and LNG service down to minus 270 degrees Fahrenheit
Select materials and toughness requirements, including 9% nickel steel, austenitic stainless and aluminium for low temperature
Compare single containment, double containment and full containment configurations and justify the selection
Specify insulation systems, vapour barriers and annular space purge, and calculate boil-off from heat ingress
Design bottom and annular plates, foundations and settlement allowances for refrigerated duty including base heating
Plan welding, examination, hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, and controlled cool-down through to handover

Requirements
No prior tank design experience is required — the code context and design logic are built from the ground up
Any engineering or technical background is enough to follow the course
Comfortable with basic algebra — every design method is worked step by step, so no advanced mathematics is needed
Helpful but not essential: some familiarity with API 650 or ASME VIII
No software or purchases needed — a copy of API 620 is useful alongside the course but not required
