Als Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) erachter komt dat zijn vrouw Emily (Julianne Moore) is vreemdgegaan en wil scheiden, stort zijn 'perfecte' leventje als een kaartenhuis in elkaar. Zijn vrije avonden besteedt Cal mokkend en alleen aan de bar, totdat player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) hem onder zijn hoede neemt. Om hem te helpen over zijn liefdesverdriet heen te komen, introduceert Jacob Cal in de wereld van vrijgezelle vrouwen, stoere drankjes, en een nieuwe kledingstijl die niet bij de degelijke warenhuizen te vinden is. Ondertussen worstelen zijn kids met hun eigen liefdesperikelen en komt Cal erachter dat je je looks wel een make-over kan geven, maar je hart niet...
