Absolutely Free (1967) è il secondo album di Frank Zappa e dei The Mothers of Invention. È, in

pratica, la continuazione della prima uscita, Freak Out!, e, ovviamente, è un nuovo affresco

formato da complesse composizioni dadaiste contraddistinte da una viscerale satira politica e

sociale.

Il disco

Come nel debutto, l'opera propone un mosaico di generi, apparentemente sconnessi fra loro ma

che il gruppo sa unire in maniera eccellente. Su questo disco l'enfasi sperimentale è più

matura, e le composizioni sono maggiormente interconnesse fra loro, tanto che ogni lato

dell'LP originale costituiva una mini-suite. Il disco contiene anche una delle canzoni più

famose delle prima parte della carriera di Zappa, Brown Shoes Don't Make It, traccia che venne

descritta come "l'intera musica compressa in soli 8 minuti".

Nel suo libro Necessity Is... Ray Collins dichiara che Absolutely Free è probabilmente il suo

disco preferito dei classici dischi dei The Mothers of Invention.
